Donna Grund Slepack, Eric Bagai, and Catherine Thomasson—Oregon PSR
Here is the accumulation of what we have learned, from the first event organized in New York City in 1982, the first international event in 1985, and the many Portland events that followed, up to the present. Everything here and the rest of this web site may be copied, modified for your own Shadow Project, and reproduced.
Whether you are a one-person Shadow Project, or a team of hundreds trying to cover a city of millions, you will need an organizational plan, a timeline, and a means of making shadows. You will also need to create flyers and press releases, and we've included some samples here.
The Shadow Project can be organized and completed in eight to twelve weeks, depending upon your local conditions, the number of organizers and volunteers involved, and the enthusiasm everyone brings with them. We know that your situation will be different, and you will have to adapt to it by making large and small changes in everything here. Write to us at info@ShadowProjectHome.org and tell us about what works for you.
The Shadow Project is one of the easiest and most enjoyable actions we’ve done. It generates a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment among everyone involved, and makes participants into stakeholders in peace. For many, this is their first experience with political actions, and their first step as lifelong activists. We hope the Shadow Project will bring you what it has brought us: an annual renewal of purpose and meaning.
